Dart and Rees Valleys
The Dart and Rees valleys are located near head of Lake Wakatipu. The two valleys follow a roughly parallel course on either side of the Forbes mountains and are joined by a straight forward saddle. Transport is available to both ends of the track from Glenorchy.

Good tracks in both valleys make the going easy and view in the upper Dart and Rees valleys are spectactular. The round trip can be accomplished in four days but it is worth spending extra time at the Dart hut and making the trip up to Cascade Saddle to view the Dart glacier and see Mt Aspiring across the Matukituki valley. Kea basin in the lower Rees valley is also worth a look. It is a large snow basin nestled under the impressive Mt Earnslaw. There is an excellent rock bivy at the entrance to the basin.
