Tramping Photos 1

New Zealand is a beautiful country and offers some tremendous tramping.  Look at these photos and see for yourself.

The links below will take you to an index of the photos for that trip. Clicking on the thumbprint will display a larger version of the photo.

Lake Waikaremoana

The Lake Waikaremoana is a pleasant three to four day tramp around the shores of the lake - October 2007. View the Google Map of the route(may be slow to load).

Ruahine Range

The Ruahine Range has a number of tracks and huts. We went to Sunrise Hut and to Howletts Hut during a week in the area in March 2007.

Christmas 2007

Pack rafting on the Able Tasman. Enjoying the sunshine in Lees Creek off the Rainbow Valley and tramping on the Wankapeka Track to Wangapeka Saddle and Biggs Tops.

Bushline Hut in Winter

Bushline Hut is on the ridge of Mt Robert overlooking Lake Rotoiti in Nelson Lakes. The views are tremendous. Winter 2006.

Kepler Track

The Kepler Track is one of New Zealand's great walks. Starting at Lake Te Anau the track climbs above the bushline and follows the ridge line from Mt Luxmore in a westerly direction before descending into the Iris Burn. The track follows the Iris Burn down to Lake Manapouri before returning to Lake Te Anau beside the Waiau river - April 2006. View the Google Map of the route.

Caples and Greenstone Valleys

These two valleys provide pleasant tramping and good huts. The Caples and Greenstone valleys lie south of the Routeburn valley at the head of Lake Wakatipu. The round trip takes three to four days and can be done in most weather - March 2006. View the Google Map of the route.

Rabbit Pass

Rabbit Pass links the south branch of the upper Wilkin valley with the East Matukituki valley. It is an interesting but demanding trip with the ascent of the Waterfall Face and the descent off Rabbit Pass. Not for the faint hearted or those without some rock climbing exerience - March 2006. View the Google Map of the route.

West Matukituki - Liverpool Bivy

The West Matukituki river flows into Lake Wanaka. It is easy walking and gives access to a number of popular tramping and climbing routes including Mount Aspiring. Liverpool Bivy is situated just above the bushline toward the head of the valley and give a great view of the surronding peaks. The track up from the valley is fairly steep in places - March 2006. o Lake Manapouri before returning to Lake Te Anau beside the Waiau river - April 2006. View the Google Map of the route.

The Waiau and Thompson Passes

This trip starting at the head of Lake Rotoroa in Nelson Lakes National Park provides around trip. Starting in the West Sabine the track follows up to Blue Lake - a picturesque mountain tarn. From here a route leads past Lake Constance and up onto Waiau pass then down into the headwaters of the Waiau river. At the head of this valley is Thompson Pass which gives access to the Durville valley and back to Lake Rotoroa. To make this trip more interesting we carried pack rafts and used them on Lake Constance and down the lower half of the Durville - December 2005. View the Google Map of the route.

Sugarloaf Pass

Half an hour along the Routeburn Track on the Glenorchy side is the turn off to Sugarloaf Pass. The pass joins the Routeburn and the Rockburn valleys. It is one of the passes in the Five Passes route connecting the Beansburn, Rockburn, Routeburn circuit - March 2005.

The Dart-Rees Valleys

The weather was so bad - two heavy storm warnings for the same week - that we decided to do the Dart - Rees and stay in huts rather than our tent on the intended route round the Five Passes. It was a wise decision. The Dart river came up about three metres and filled the river bed from bank to bank and the side streams and creeks were inpassable until the rain stopped - March 2005
